Student Biography

What defines Ryan Blatz? Well, for the past five years, Ryan has been in the Architectural Engineering program at Penn State University, so it is safe to say that education is a large portion of that definition. In fact, Ryan decided on Architectural Engineering in 7th grade after writing an English paper about Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright's inventive blend of architecture and engineering sparked an early interest in Ryan for this growing field. Fast forward to present day and Ryan is well on his way to graduating from the structural option in May 2012, when he will receive EIT status. His passion for this field has driven Ryan to take numerous graduate-level courses during his undergrad. So does education define Ryan Blatz? Yes, but this only a small part in a complex definition.

Now in his second year with Penn State's Office of Physical Plant (OPP), Ryan has been involved in numerous parts of the project process. He has followed projects from permitting phase to design to building maintenance. This year, Ryan has been heading a project that will allow OPP to run paperless and more efficiently, by organizing all permits and drawings on one network program.

When not in class, Ryan devotes most of his time being a Resident Assistant(RA) to first-year students. Over his three and a half years as an RA, Ryan has helped over 260 students grow both academically and socially, and has also helped new RA's develop into young leaders. With all this responsibility, Ryan also makes sure to save some time to play guitar and learn new styles of music. Now, these are all the little things that make the definition of Ryan Blatz complete.
